Not Every Book is a 5 Star Book...

And that's okay!

           Incoming....

I don't know about you, but when I pick up a book, especially for review purposes, I am well aware that it may not be earthshaking and life changing. But shouldn't that be what a 5 star read is? Shouldn't a book you deem the highest level of stars be ah-maz-ing? Shouldn't it leave you with some kind of feels, maybe a lesson learned? Shouldn't it stick with you for days, months, years?

Shouldn't it?

Why do we just give away our stars like they're nothing?

In the indie world we have this awesome opportunity to get to know authors. It's both a blessing and a curse. A blessing because we're able to interact with the women (and men) who have created these amazingly diverse and well-rounded (hopefully) characters which we've fallen so hard for. A curse because once you know an author, your stars become personal...

There is a difference, my dear authors, between a readers thoughts on YOU and YOUR WORK. They are not one and the same, at least they shouldn't be.

My husband is BIG into the music scene. To him, music is life - just like books are to many of us. He said it best when he said:

"Even my favorite bands make shit albums sometimes."

Guess what? That applies to works of fiction, too. Sometimes they're amazing, and then sometimes they're...not. As a reader, you shouldn't feel pressured into giving a good review simply because you've liked previous publications by an individual. Or because you have developed more of a personal relationship with them.

I personally feel like there's a lot of pressure on bloggers to 5 star the shit out of everything they read. That's not fair.
It's not fair to anyone.
Not the authors.
Not the readers.
Not to themselves.
It's not fair.
Am I saying we should never give 5 stars? Nope.

What I'm saying is this:

5 STARS = Life changing. Pulled me in by my hair and wouldn't let me go.
4 STARS = Loved it. Good read. Captivating.
3 STARS = Liked it. An overall entertaining read.
2 STARS = Eh... Meh... It was.
1 STAR = What the hell did I just read?! No.
DNF = I couldn't even.

Now look... Is 3 a bad review? No. It's Average. Somewhere along the way we forgot that 3 stars is still a decent amount. Somehow 3 became 1. Writers cringe and feel that they've failed over a simple number which falls in the middle of the star scale.

Why? There's no shame in a 3 star review.

BE HONEST.

If a book is 5 star material, wonderful. If it's not, please don't rave about it like it is the next coming of Christ simply to gain favor with someone. It's wrong on so many levels and calls your integrity into question. When you rant and rave about everything you've read, your opinion slowly begins to decline in the eyes of those around you, at least in my book. It's okay not to adore every word that passes before your eyes. It's also okay to review those books and respectfully say why you feel the way you do.

Basically... As bloggers, and fellow readers, we owe each other the Courtesy of being honest with our thoughts.

Maybe this year we can do just that.

Oh, and street teams/groupies... Quit ganging up on people who don't share your opinion. They're entitled to their thoughts and feelings just as much as you are to yours. BE KIND.

Vomit over.

Chapter Break: Corinne Michaels battle of the blogs! #TeamMuffin

Corinne Michaels, writer of sexy SEAL men, asked me this question recently:

If you were stranded at sea with only a small raft which Salvation SEAL would you choose to help you survive?

Well, Corinne, that's a fantastic question! I'm all about being stranded at sea with one of your SEALs, but if I have to choose one, my heart is set on Jackson "Muffin" Cole. If you're new to Corinne's writing, you'll be excited to know that Jackson is the first book boyfriend she's written. Catherine practically falls over him in Beloved and for good reason! I mean, look at his face! It's truly a thing of beauty.

 photo 14412484397541_zpssqrcqmrz.jpg

"I told you I'd always find you, but you have to want to be found."

Aside from Jackson's perfect hair, face, eyes, body, voice, he's a true gentleman. He always makes sure his woman is well taken care of (love ya, Catherine, but you're sitting this one out). He's not just a military man, but a mogul as well. After tragedy struck his family, he stepped up and turned the Raven Cosmetics empire into a money making machine . He is not only the CEO of Raven, but is also the owner of Cole Security Forces based out of Virginia.

"You're it for me, Catherine. I'm not walking away from you or us. I wasn't ready to love again when you came crashing into me. But you made me want to try again."

Jackson is smart, savvy, athletic, and a lover of life. He's not afraid to show his true self and step up in the line of duty to help his SEAL brothers in times of need.

BONUS: His favorite movie is Empire Records. You will always have a companion to celebrate Rex Manning Day!

"I would never lie about how I feel. I would walk through fire for you."

He's honest, loves with his whole heart, and is loyal to a fault; PLUS, he's a former SEAL. He's a survivalist. He's been in the toughest of military situations and came out ahead. All of that makes up the delicious man we call Muffin. That, ladies, is why I choose Jackson Cole to chill with me while being stranded at sea.

Readers, Bloggers, and Authors Need to Take Action!

You may or may not be aware of what's going on with Amazon and reviews. Apparently if you are friends or friendly with an author (know them personally,) you no longer get a say as far as reviews are concerned. Did you just make a "what the fuck" face? I've made a few of them this morning.

What determines knowing someone personally, you ask? Good question.

Better yet, WHERE DO THEY GET THE INFORMATION FROM?!

When I contacted an Amazon employee earlier today, he said, and I quote:

"The method that we use to determine strangers, although proprietary so I cannot discuss it, is entirely legal and also, like the rest of Amazon, we scrupulously guard your privacy."

Wasn't that a lovely way to skip around an answer? I'm assuming it's through social media. NEWS FLASH: I don't KNOW most to the people in the book community outside of my computer screen. Social media does not equal friendship. It's true. I've met Sarah in real life. We're friends. I know her personally, but there are others in the "book world" that I have never laid eyes on outside of pictures posted on Facebook or Instagram. I don't chat with them on a regular basis. I don't know what their favorite food is, shoe size, birth date. And they're even holding people like your neighbors against you. I DON'T EVEN TALK TO MY NEIGHBORS. Yeah, I'm one of those people. So sue me.

My point? Amazon is out of control. We can do something to make a difference. Maybe...

There is a petition circulating around to stop this ridiculous "friends with authors" nonsense. It's not the only problem I currently have with Amazon, but it's a start.

CHAPTER BREAK: We have a new reviewer! *high five*

Who has two thumbs and a new reviewer?

This girl!

So super excited to welcome this girl to our crazy little inked slice of heaven. This, of course, means twice the reviews, sarcastic comments, and random babble - an all around win.

Meet Sarah:

♥ Pennsylvania born, transplanted to Florida and trying to survive the humidity.

♥ Mom of two children by day, web hosting tech support by night.

♥ Wife of a tattooed, bearded, motorcycle rider.

♥ Tattoos and piercings are my jam and Zumba is super fun.

♥ I truly believe Seinfeld can be quoted at any time in everyday life.

♥ I'm new to the book scene. After years of denying Christian Grey, I read the Fifty Shades trilogy in July of 2014, then I read it two more times in the weeks that followed. This began my fast spiral into reading addiction.

♥ I love all things social media but hate the judgment it brings.

♥ If you give me chocolate and coffee I'll be your best friend forever. Add a side of Mean Girls and we are soul mates.

♥ Chipotle is my spirit animal.

♥ Yes, my Ray-Bans are prescription.

(She's pretty rad.)

Chapter Break: Rep your favorite superheroes on October 1st!

I don't share much about my personal life on this blog. That's about to change.

My daughter (Shannon) LOVES superheroes. It's borderline obsessive. Transformers, Avengers, Super-man, Batman - she loves them all. She recently started Kindergarten (July 31st...yeah, I know.) and while she loves school, the kids can be very cruel. They've made fun of her on numerous occasions - the worst being when they made fun of her for choosing to wear a Captain America backpack to school.

If you're my friend on Facebook, you know that this issue has been on going and very near and dear to my heart.  This is my most recent FB post/rant/situation:

Prepare yourself, I'm about to rant.

Shannon took a toy to school today. I know kids aren't supposed to take toys to school, but Pat zipped it in her book bag where it stayed throughout the school day. Or so we thought...

It is NEVER fun to walk up to the school and see your child in tears; we're talking the big crocodile kind. At first Pat and I thought she had gotten into some kind of trouble, until she mumbled something about a kid stealing her Captain America action figure. (It HAD to be that one, right?!) After calming her down enough to make sense of the situation, she told us that while packing up today she noticed it was gone.

Pat and I looked at one another and then marched into the school to talk to the teacher. Mind you, there was NO note to us, email or phone call. When we entered the classroom the teacher explained that there wasn't enough time at the end of the school day to deal with the situation, yet assured me that she grilled the kids and threatened to check book bags.

Here are my issues:

1. If that was my classroom I'd have had the kids dump out their book bags right then and there. They should have exactly three things in their bags - an agenda, a lunch box (if they bring lunch), and a change of clothes. It would take all of 2 minutes to check... She said that the kids were already leaving. Shannon's a walker, they leave the classroom first... ERRRR doesn't make sense..

2. WHY WAS THERE NO NOTE TO ME?! She claims that there wasn't enough time to write a note. If there was enough time to "drill the students" there was enough time to scribble down a short message to me.

3. It's not about the toy. It's a piece of plastic. It's about teaching your children right from wrong. I know I can't hold the teachers responsible for that... We make an appoint to teach our daughter NOT to take things that don't belong to her. It makes me sad that kids do that. On the other hand, she now knows what it feels like when someone takes something from you. Shannon taking something from another student became even more unlikely after suffering through it herself.

4. First the kids make fun of her, and now they steal her stuff.. UGH!

I'm just a mad mom that needed to get all this out. Thanks for letting me.

On the brightside...
Me: You still have your stuffed Captain America, and we can get a new one of the one that was taken from you.
Shan: No, I have two, my stuffed one and Daddy.
Pat: Yup, I'm not going anywhere, and they couldn't fit me in their backpack anyway.

An AMAZING friend of mine clued me into a "movement".  Shannon isn't the only little girl who has been suffering.  There is a Kindergartner named Leanna who is going through a similar situation. *heart breaks even more* Her little sister - who is only 7 - has decided to fight back.  She has declared that October 1st is WEAR YOUR SUPERHEROES DAY! Be sure to post a picture with the hashtag #WearYourSuperheroes

To read Leanna's story - Click HERE!

Superheroes aren't just for boys, they're for EVERYONE!  They fight to make this world (or their world) a better place.  That's something I can get behind, and I'm proud of my daughter for loving them so fiercely.  I encourage you to wear something superhero related this Wednesday. I'm prepared to fight for my little girl, are you?

Thanks!

CELESTE FEST ~ A celebration of all things FLAT-OUT CELESTE by Jessica Park! (Reni's Review and Other Goodies...)

 FLAT OUT CELESTE
by Jessica Park
Release date: May 22, 2014
Amazon | B&N

Whether you were charmed by Celeste in Flat-Out Love or are meeting her for the first time, this book is a joyous celebration of differences, about battling private wars that rage in our heads and in our hearts, and—very much so— this is a story about first love..

For high-school senior Celeste Watkins, every day is a brutal test of bravery. And Celeste is scared. Alienated because she’s too smart, her speech too affected, her social skills too far outside the norm, she seems to have no choice but to retreat into isolation.

But college could set her free, right? If she can make it through this grueling senior year, then maybe. If she can just find that one person to throw her a lifeline, then maybe, just maybe.
Justin Milano, a college sophomore with his own set of quirks, could be that person to pull her from a world of solitude. To rescue her—that is, if she’ll let him.

Together, they may work. Together, they may save each other. And together they may also save another couple—two people Celeste knows are absolutely, positively flat-out in love.

We were challenged to have a little Celeste Fest fun. Nothing says I loved the book like dying your hair pink,  curtsying at a rest stop in Florida, and creating terrible coffee foam art for your family to ridicule. (I only posted one picture... Just know that there were many misshaped foam creations. You should be thankful that I am not subjecting you to them.) I LOVED Flat-Out Celeste. In fact, you can read my full review below these terrible Polaroid pictures. (Are you singing the Outkast song? 'Cause I am...)

On a side note: I've never wished I had unicorn socks more than at this very moment in time. This calls for an intense internet search for just the right pair...

#AnchoredinFoam                                                                      #Curtsylikeyoumeanit

My initial plan of action was to write this review as Celeste would. There would be absolutely no contractions, causing the review to sound dignified, kind of like a sophisticated robot. Then I realized that I am much more of a Justin. I babble on and on about anything and everything. Justin is more my speed. Not like an actual speed. I’m not sure how fast the average U.S. male (or female) walks. Seeing as he’s from Boston it’s probably pretty fast. City dwellers tend to walk with a sense of purpose. My husband says that walking is a lost art. That’s usually as he’s trying his best not to elbow said people on the way to his final destination while dragging me behind him. He’s right. Walking is a lost art… #Walkingtakespractice #Howfastistoofast #Thelostartofwalking

See? So much more of a Justin…

When I first picked up Flat-Out Celeste, I wasn't sure I’d like it. For shame! After adoring Flat-Out Love for so long how could anything compare? Julie and Matt were just so perfect for one another. *insert dreamy sigh* Oh crud, I hope you’ve read Flat-Out Love; if you haven’t, you need to get on that. (And disregard the sentence before that last sentence. I’m hopped up on caffeine from practicing pretty foam pictures in my coffee froth.) Celeste was kind of this quirky kid back then. She was young - we’re talking early teen years here - and while an extremely important character, she wasn’t exactly front stage material. Waaaaay back then, Celeste needed to carry around a cardboard cutout of her brother, Finn.  It seems odd, I know, but that’s part of what makes Celeste…Celeste. She’s unique, quirky, and supremely intelligent.

Fast forward five or so years and Celeste is a senior in high school. She’s started checking out colleges, Ivy League, big name schools. Imagine her surprise when some guy from a no-name school in California contacts her. The student turns out to be a little quirky himself. They begin exchanging emails and *poof* a relationship of sorts is born.

Now, it’s important to mention that for a while throughout the book, Celeste is trying to “find herself”. That’s probably not the right term. It’s like she’s trying to fit in… When you’re different and you so desperately want acceptance, you’ll do some pretty interesting things to find it.

“You know the expression that love makes the world go ‘round? That might be true, but love comes from the way differences interact. How personalities interact. How we bounce off each other, challenge each other, and how we push and pull. It’s through those tensions that we connect with others and with ourselves. And it’s how we fall in love. Because there is magic in diversity. Without the Celestes, the world wouldn’t go ‘round. Do you see that?”

I was completely fine through 80% of the novel and then WHAM, I wasn’t.  We’re talking puffy eyed, snot filled, ugly crying. When something is revealed to Celeste, it was more than I could take. I could feel her heart breaking. Mine broke right along with it. During that moment, remember that things will get better. Just. Keep. Reading.

The gist of it all is to learn to love yourself for who you are, in the place where you stand. Flat-Out Celeste is about embracing your quirks, loving the person that resides within your skin, and taking a chance on life and love. It’s about learning to be happy. Needless to say, I LOVED this book. It’s more than a book, it’s a lesson, and those are the best kind of stories. (Plus, there’s mention of Unicorn socks… That’s five star material right there! J

Jessica is the author of LEFT DROWNING, the New York Times bestselling FLAT-OUT LOVE (and the companion piece FLAT-OUT MATT), and RELATIVELY FAMOUS. She lives in New Hampshire where she spends an obscene amount time thinking about rocker boys and their guitars, complex caffeinated beverages, and tropical vacations. **Warning: this book contains an addictively filthy alpha male who will dampen your panties and own your days and nights. Proceed at your own risk.**

Meet Colton Drake...

I have no idea why she auctioned off her virginity for a cool mill. Regardless, I’m now the proud new owner of a perfectly intact hymen. A lot of good that will do me. I have certain tastes, certain sexual proclivities. My cock is a bit more discriminatory than most. And training a virgin takes finesse and patience – both of which I lack.

Sophie Evans has been backed into a corner. With her sister’s life hanging in the balance, the only choice is to claw her way out, even if that means selling her virginity to the highest bidder at an exclusive erotic club. When Colton Drake takes her home, she quickly learns nothing is as it seems with this beautifully troubled man. Being with him poses challenges she never expected, and pushes her to want things she never anticipated.

Chapter Break: 20 Random Things About Me You Never Cared to Know

You've been reading all my rambles and essentially know nothing about me. It's time to fix that. Here are 20 random facts about the lady sitting behind this keyboard (and I use the term lady loosely...)

1. Drinking coffee - I do it often and live to regret almost every cup. Coffee and my tummy have a love/hate relationship.

2. I hate when people breath on me. Seriously hate it. H-A-T-E. I used to tell my mom to stop breathing when I was younger. I was a mean kid. Now I'm a mean wife.

3. If I can change my mind about something, I will.

4. I can't pick a favorite color, book, movie, or food. Don't even ask. See #3.

5. Over 400 pounds of dog lives in my house. One of my dogs is an English Mastiff. His name is Hercules (after the dog from The Sandlot.)  He is the biggest baby ever. He's only dangerous if you're allergic to slobber.

6. I am probably one of the most easy going people you will ever meet. I think I must have been a bird in another life - just sorta go where the wind takes me.

7. If I could meet one person from history it would be, without a doubt, Ghandi.

8. I will listen to an genre of music as long as it has a positive message.

9. I HAVE to look at each bite of food before I eat it.

10. In high school I'd carry deodorant with me wherever I went. It was like some fucked up security blanket.

11. Growing up my dad called me Stinkface. Nice nickname, right?

12. When I was little I found a turtle, took him home and named him turdy.  Who does that? He ran away. I don't blame him.

13. I have a major sweet tooth. It's my downfall.

14.  I've dyed my hair just about every color under the sun.

15. I have 5 tattoos and 7 piercings... Even though I claim to be done with both, I'm not.

16. I could live my life wearing nothing but Chuck Taylor's...on my feet.

17. We are a baseball family.

18. I am just a giant kid. I think that's why my kid likes me so much.

19. Oreos are gross.  Does that make me un-American?

20. I still don't know what I want to be when I grow up.
